Believe it or not, the Mets had a lead today, and a good one at that, unfortunatly 6 runs is a lot to give up for a starter and in the end the Mets lost by a score of 6-5 to complete the sweep at Wrigley Field. Niese started the game and threw 3 shutout innings before giving up a solo shot to Dexter Fowler in the 4th.  At that point, the Mets were winning 3 to 1 and by the time the Cubs came to bat in the 5th the Mets had added another 2 runs, but the Cubs managed to tack on another 4.

Of the 6 runs Niese had given up, 2 of them were unearned thanks to yet another error by Wilmer Flores, his 8th of the season. In his 6.1 innings of work, Niese had gave up 6 hits and struck out 2 batters and by the end of the game his ERA had risen to 2.49.

Unlike some other games in this series, hitting was not a problem for the Mets, they were able to hit and they hit A LOT, but this time the pitching and fielding just could not match up. In the 2nd inning, Anthony Recker hit his 1st home run of the season to left field off Travis Wood. In the 4th inning, Wilmer Flores connected for his 5th home run of the season to left center off Wood and the next batter, Recker hit another to left. Flores is now one of just 4 shortstops in baseball with 5 home runs, just 1 behind Marcus Semien.

Home Runs weren't the only way the Mets scored as Mayberry went 1-4 with 2 RBI's and brought his average up to .121. Overall, today was a pleasent game for Mets hitters, Granderson went 2-5 to bring his average up to .241 while Duda went 2-4 to bring his up to .296. Daniel Murphy got a single in his only at bat as a pinch hitter to further improve his May batting average to .348.

The bullpen did a great job keeping the Cubs ahead by only one run once Niese left and Robles, Leathersich, and Goeddel combined for 1.2 scoreless innings. Jack Leathersich made his re debut today and gave up a walk while Goeddel has now gone a bit more than 9 innings in relief without allowing a run this season.

The Mets now come home to Citi Field to play 3 games against the Brewers and 4 against the Cardinals starting tomorrow night with Bartolo Colon hoping to earn his 7th win of the season.
